January Studio Group

We've been building our note reading skills all month and had a lot of fun at Studio group!

  • 'Say then Play' scales to reinforce the relationship between the fingers and notes(pitch) on the fingerboard.
  • High/Low Space/Line Bingo: Identifying High or Low notes and Space or Line notes.
Notating a scale and adding note stems. Ask your child if they remember the rule!
*If the note is above the middle line the stem goes down, if the note is below the middle line the stem goes up. Extra points if they can put the stem on the correct side of the note!
  • Fingerboard Geography: Can you play two (different) D's on your violin?
  • Fine!: Spelling any scale in order (G maj. scale: GABCDEFG). The first one to say Fine! wins. The Italian musical term fine (pronounced fee'-nay) marks the end.
  • Musical Twister- who knew the twister mat could double as a fingerboard?!
Students learned about and were able to identify enharmonics (notes with the same pitch but different name)!

See What's New in 2018!!

Happy New Year!

I am excited to tell you about a new software program I've started using developed just for music teachers; My Music Staff! You will receive an email inviting you to create a password and login to the parent/student portal where you will be able to access downloads, the studio calendar, notes about lessons, etc. You can access this blog with updates from there as well. Let me know if you have any trouble logging in!

I'm super excited to start using a new app developed for Suzuki students! It is Suzuki Accompany Music (https://suzuki.accompanymusic.com/).This is a great resource for those of you that don't play piano (or like me -can only accompany the Twinkles!). You can adjust the tempo without changing the pitch and select sections to practice in a loop -a great tool for home practice!

A few other apps that I use and love are Note Rush and Intonia! Adding technology into practice can help when a 'break' is needed to reboot focus or add a little fun!

Blog post from "Practice Makes it Easy" by Leslie Thackeray

Thanks to Karen C. for reminding me about this blog post! (Karen says she has extra duct tape if you need it for practice this week 🎻😉)

Adding an element of fun to practice can make all the difference. Try some of these ideas below:

Practice Makes It Easy: Practice Ideas: Sometimes you just need to add some spice to practicing.  Here are what some of my teacher friends did with their practicing this week: Ka...

Violin "Advent" Calendar: DAY 31

DAY 31:
100 day Practice Challenge

Happy New Year! Are you setting any goals or resolutions?
Why not start the new year off with the 100 day practice challenge!

Some students have already taken on this challenge.
One student was set to reach 100 days during the Christmas break and a few others are not far behind! It isn't easy... some had to start over after 20 days. I am so proud of them and their determination to start again!
I can tell a big difference in their playing and motivation. Their review pieces are solid and the 'new' pieces are easier.

Print or make a 100 day chart.
Practice everyday (consecutively).
Mark off everyday you practice.

Exceptions:
You can count listening to the CD as practice if you are sick, break an arm, go on vacation where it would be unsafe to take your violin with you (camping,  hot/cold temps. -violin left in a car, etc.) or family emergency.  On days where it's late, you just got home, there's homework and dinner, etc. play through one piece and do better the next day.

P. S. 3 ways to get your child motivated to practice

100 day trophies will be awarded at the Studio recital.

If you've already reached 100 days go for 200 or even a whole year!
